The first day of school is a memorable time for both parents and kids. Meeting new friends and teachers means making new memories. It’s important to document these milestones in a place that you can refer to years down the road!
As a busy mom I don’t always have time to orchestrate Pinterest perfect moments, but I always take a first day of school photo at the same spot every year in front of our house. There’s something to be said for consistency. It is a fun and no stress way to capture this family memory. Looking back at the pictures from each year beginning with the first day of kindergarten is a fun recording of how much my daughters have changed since their Disney Princess backpack days. Now I have two middle schoolers in the house and the energy and excitement surrounding back to school is still just as special.
Don’t have time to come up with a creative twist to the first day of school annual photo? No worries! We’ve compiled a list of five creative, yet simple, first day of school picture ideas to help capture this special time for friends and family. After you’ve snapped the perfect pic, share your photos online for just your family and friends to see on your Families Connect page!
Remember, not all pictures need to be posed. Don’t forget to capture those little moments, such as your child waiting at the bus stop, or meeting their new teacher for the first time!
Chalk it Up
Celebrate the first day of school with a chalkboard sign that is an old school reminder of classrooms from your own past. Create a unique custom sign for your child. Many craft stores, such as Michael’s, also sell signs in creative shapes, which adds to the fun.
Instant cameras are hip again and my teenage daughter loves snapping photos with her best friends. This is a simple DIY project that even non crafty parents could pull together. (It’s a fun idea for other occasions as well!) Your social network community via Families Connect would love to see these fun photos!

Want to document just how much your child changes from year to year? Ask them a few basic questions about their favorites, from foods to hobbies, and then use a simple photo editing software, such as PicMonkey, to add their answers.

This is such a fun idea for both girls and boys. Purchase a simple “Class Of” t-shirt in a large or XL that documents the graduation year for your child. Snap a pic of them wearing the same shirt each year and you’ll see how much they grow, literally! Sharing photos with family has never been so fun!
Lastly, probably the simplest idea is to have your kids hold up their fingers to indicate what grade they are entering.
